“Cancer is a journey, but you walk the road alone. There are many places to stop along the way and get nourishment – you just have to be willing to take it.”
– Emily Hollenberg, cancer survivor

On November 4th 2014, Nathan’s path took a mountainous detour – doctors diagnosed him with a rare form of cancer. An avid explorer, Nathan took the fight to cancer with the same passion, purpose, and optimism he brought to every adventure. Over a campfire, Nathan began sharing the news he was given with close family and friends, an emotional moment that followed with an invitation for them to join him on the journey in climbing the mountain we call cancer.
During chemotherapy infusions, Nathan began traveling vicariously into the great outdoors through the lens of some of his favorite Adventure Photographers. Using Instagram, Vsco and other platforms, Nathan was able to wander outside of the hospital walls and enjoy a sunset, the view from atop a mountain, or the oceans coast from his hospital room. These small gifts of adventure brought hope and encouragement to get back outside and someday explore the great outdoors cancer free.

On June 16th, 2015, Nathan and his team were given the news, they had reached the summit. Nathan beat cancer. The moment was bittersweet. With a sister who worked at a local Children’s Hospital, Nathan understood that there were countless individuals still ascending the mountain…still fighting for survival. Heartbreakingly, amongst those countless are children. Many who may not have the opportunity to get outside; the painful reality inspired Nathan to do something about it. With a second chance at life, Nathan understood the need, and it sparked the beginning of a new found mission – he would find a way to bring a fun & inspiring outdoor experience to children that are currently in the hospital fighting cancer and other life threatening illnesses. A mission designed to support and boost these childrens spirits and raise awareness towards childhood cancer.
Using business to support mission, the STALYON brand was formed.
To make this happen, Nathan understood it would take a team, and not your average team but a community of high-impact individuals who love the great outdoors and share the same values when it comes to helping others. Shortly after designing the STALYON Basecamp Collection, Nathan and team converted a van into a mobile store and hit the road. Traveling to local trailheads, climbing gyms and surf locations the goal was to reach fellow explorers who share a mutual passion in getting outside, and using adventure for good.
With every STALYON purchase you give an empowering outdoor experience to children who are currently in the hospital, fighting cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
To expand the mission at STALYON, we’re humbled & honored to partner with REI as our first retail basecamp. Starting in July of 2019, we begin a new adventure driven to reach more children who are currently in local Children’s Hospitals within the surrounding REI areas.
"I was doing chemotherapy, I had started to not feel good that morning and they made me smile. Everyone in my family is in love with the photo's they gave me."
At STALYON we are grateful to have an amazing community of high-impact individuals showing support and using their purchase power for good. From Banff to Bend, California to ColoRADo, Washington to New York, Minnesota to Arizona, Salt Lake to D.C, our community of explorers share a burning passion to not only get outside, hike, climb, run, bike, surf, camp, ski, and capture the golden hour; but truly exploring greatness and live life to the fullest.
If you’re reading this and your new to the STALYON community, we are excited to have you join our fire and be a part of our mission in using adventure for good.
